A breaker is a safety device – repeated tripping means something is wrong on the circuit. Replacing it with a bigger breaker is a common and dangerous mistake.
Three main causes
1. Overload
Too many appliances on one circuit. Spread the load or add a new circuit.
2. Short circuit
Wires touching cause an instant trip and need an electrician.
3. Earth leakage
The RCCB trips when current leaks to earth – often moisture or a faulty heater element.
What to do
- Unplug everything on the circuit and reset the breaker.
- Switch appliances back on one by one to find the culprit.
- If it trips with nothing connected, the wiring needs checking.
We supply and install breakers and DB panels.
The breakers in your panel and why it matters
- MCB (miniature circuit breaker): protects against overload and short circuits and trips when current exceeds its rating.
- RCD / RCCB (earth-leakage breaker): trips on a small current leaking to earth and protects people from shock; usually on bathroom and kitchen circuits.
- Main breaker: cuts the whole home; repeated main trips mean a high total load or a serious fault.
Knowing which breaker trips is half the diagnosis. See types of circuit breakers for more.
Causes people often miss
- Moisture in an outdoor socket box or bathroom light that trips the RCD after rain or a shower.
- A failing water-heater element leaking current into the water, tripping the breaker when the heater switches on.
- A weak AC compressor drawing a high start-up current.
- An old, weak breaker tripping below its rating; replace it with the same rating, never a bigger one.
- A loose terminal in the panel that heats up and causes intermittent trips.
When it is an emergency
If you smell burning, see sparks or blackening in the panel, feel a hot breaker, or the main breaker trips more than once, switch that circuit off, do not reset it, and call a 24/7 emergency electrician. These are signs of overheating that can lead to fire.
What the electrician does on the visit
- Identifies the circuit and the type of breaker that trips.
- Measures the real load and compares it with the cable size and breaker rating.
- Tests insulation and isolates appliances one by one.
- Fixes the cause: tightening terminals, replacing a damaged socket or breaker, or moving loads to a new circuit through additional wiring.
Does your panel need an upgrade?
Many homes have doubled their power use with extra air conditioners, heaters and kitchen appliances, while the panel and circuit layout stayed the same. Breakers then trip because circuits carry more than they were designed for. An upgrade can mean new dedicated circuits for heavy loads, an earth-leakage breaker for bathrooms and kitchens, and labelling every breaker so you know what it feeds. You can find breakers and distribution panels in our shop, fitted by the technician to match the cable sizes.
Dangerous mistakes to avoid
- Taping or tying a breaker so it stays on.
- Fitting a bigger breaker without changing the cable.
- Removing the earth-leakage breaker because it “trips too often”.
- Running an AC or water heater permanently from an extension lead.
All of these move the danger from the breaker to the cables inside your walls.
What to prepare before you call
Note which breaker trips and when (with a specific appliance or randomly), whether it happens after rain, and WhatsApp a photo of the panel. With this, our electrician brings the right parts and saves time on the repair.
Frequently asked questions
Can I fit a bigger breaker?
No – the breaker must match the cable size, otherwise you risk fire.
Why do breakers trip more in summer?
Air conditioners run for long periods and draw high current, which exposes load problems and loose terminals.
